South African Dance Wand
This beaded ornament comes from the Ndundza or Ndebele of South Africa. It is carried in hand by a dancer and used to accentuate movement in ceremonial dance. The form was possibly inspired by telephone poles, symbols of power from the outside world. The wooden form has been wrapped in silver foil and masterfully beaded in latticework that spirals up the central pole and across the horizontal bars. It features white, blue, pink and black beads accented with a splash of red near the top and is in very good condition. The silver foil would add a glittering effect for an evening performance by firelight or shimmer in the sunlight. It measures 19.5 in. x 12.5 in. and is a truly unique example of South African beadwork. SOLD.
