Old Yoruba Drum This beautiful, old Yoruba talking-drum from Nigeria is called a dundun and has a rich appearance from many years of ceremonial use. The body of the hand-carved wooden drum is an hourglass form that stands about 20 in. high. It is completely surrounded by twisted animal hide that control the tightness of the thin goatskin drumhead, when squeezed by the player’s arm and against his body. The drum head measures 10 in. across. A wide leather shoulder strap with velvet tie-dyed design further adds to the visual appeal. The original drumstick and a pair of leg bands with beautiful, old, bronze bells attached are included in this lot. The drum and accoutrements are in very good condition. The skin on the drum head is intact, but is very fragile due to age and use. This is a handsome, authentic artifact, that was retired after a full life of service. $700. |
