Merger Oil Painting In this time of uncertainty, when violence and destruction occur all too frequently; when differences of belief systems or racial origins consume compassion and commonsense, I searched for consolation in my studio. I struggled with an age old question, “If matter is impermanent, and our material world transient, what then remains eternal? ” It is obvious to the physicist and metaphysician alike, that life goes on, reforming and recreating from five basic elemental properties: earth, air, fire, water and ether. This is the common thread that unites mankind despite dogma or personal philosophy. This is what connects us to everything on Earth and of the Cosmos. It became my quest to attempt a symbolic representation of this inscrutable life-force that animates all things, seen and unseen. And to visually explore these elemental components that sustain all life. In juxtaposing fire and water, earth and air on canvas, I began an alchemical journey that reassured me that life will and does go on. These primordial wanderings of my imagination become the image presented here. It is painted in oils on gallery-wrapped,stretched canvas. 30 in. x 40 in.
