Kirghiz Woman's Hat
This traditional Kirghiz woman’s headdress is a soft, helmet-like form created from cotton muslin and embellished with distinctive earflaps on either side of the head. The peaked crown reaches 7.5 inches from the bottom edge.

A 33 inch fringed train, attached to the back center of the headdress, is richly embroidered in organically inspired motifs popular in Kirghizistan. The earflap appendages, measuring 7 in. x 3 in., are elaborately embroidered in maroon chain stitch, with accents of blue and green.

A three inch embroidered band of circular forms and multicolored zigzags of soft brown, golden ochre, dusky pink and lilac is attached around the back of the head above the train. The front edge is trimmed in a woven strip of maroon cloth.

The train is backed with printed cotton that may have been Russian in origin. Traditionally the plain cotton crown is covered with another elaborate layer. This distinctive headdress is replete with folkloric charm and rarely seen on the textile art market. $275.
