Turkmen Woman's Hat This lovely peaked cap was worn by a young Turkmen woman of marriageable age in Northern Afghanistan. It is a soft cotton form completely covered in the distinctive couched embroidery that is the regional style. Age and wear have softened the colors to terra cotta and coral, accented with a rich teal blue. On the interior the original reds and oranges of the threads are still vibrant. Golden thread is randomly stitched throughout this skullcap and twinkles in the border. Geometric patterns that are variants of the ram’s horn, a hallmark of Turkman design, and chevrons are the main decorative motifs. It measures 6 inches across and roughly 5 inches high. A charming example of Turkmen textile tradition… $150. |
