Rare Silver Coma/Fibula from Bhutan

Rare Silver Coma/Fibula from Bhutan

This unique clasp from the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan features a heavy silver Chinese coin, Yuan Shih Kai, known as the "Fat Man", from the early 20th C.

It was seemingly chosen for it's decorative appeal, as well as the monetary value and is studded with a natural turquoise surmounted by a golden lotus bud. Elaborate chain work adds to its distinctive design and suggests a ceremonial or occasional purpose, as ornamental display, as well as utilitarian object.

Comas were used to fasten attire such as women's "kira", beautifully woven, wrapped dresses traditionally secured by coma and belted.

What a handsome adornment, rarely seen and definitely a one of a kind collectible!
