Large Antique Gilded Lacquer Tsampa Bowl from Tibet

Large Antique Gilded Lacquer Tsampa Bowl from Tibet

This beautifully handcrafted wooden object possesses a stately form, a gorgeous layered patina and a practical as well as a ceremonial function in traditional life…“Tsampa” is finely ground barley flour which is a staple for traditional butter tea, and other food, but also essential for offerings and creating ceremonial torma sculptures during religious holidays.

Much of the gold and silver gilt has worn away from age and use but suggests this handsome lidded bowl had an active “life” that was well-lived. Structurally it is very sound and in good condition. It’s circumference is 26 inches, diameter is 9 inches and stands about 6 inches high.
